Determine the Right Fit
Not every therapist is the right therapist for you. There are some important things to consider when choosing a therapist and it is important to remember that you have a choice in who you work with. Research shows that the key in determining a successful outcome to therapy is the development of a safe, comfortable relationship with your therapist. Compatibility and fit are essential to progress. Therapist skill level, training background and experience, ongoing continuing education and the ability to provide honest, direct feedback are other important factors to consider.
Throughout my 20-year career in the mental health field, I have compiled a list of questions to help people find the right therapist. Please feel free to use these to help you determine whether this person is right for you:
1.) What training and experience do you have for my specific problem?
2.) How do the specific methods or modalities that you use help me reach my goals? Is there any research that shows that these methods work?
3.) How long will it take for me to notice some improvement?
4.) How will my progress be measured?
5.) What will you do if I begin to plateau and stop seeing changes?
6.) Will you help me practice the skills I need in everyday life to make changes or will you just tell me what I should do? How will you help me practice?
7.) Do you assign home practice?
8.) Do you ever refer individuals for a medication evaluation or refer them for a different type of therapy?
Finding a good therapist with the right mix of compatibility and skills sometimes takes work. However, the progress that you make and the changes that you see in your life will be worth it!
